Does Pot Make You Paranoid? New Study Says…

With pot smoking on the rise and more and more states making pot legal, it’s worth asking the question: If you and your new girlfriend decide to get high together, is there a risk she could get paranoid about it? Could you become paranoid? It’s worth thinking about before you end up melting down in the course of spending some party time with a young lady, either an amateur or a professional entertainer. So what’s the deal?Well, in the past, there was plenty of research that showed marijuana smoking could cause someone to become paranoid, at least for a little while. Then there was a study that asserted you could have a psychotic disorder triggered by, or associated with, smoking pot. Really, it was starting to sound like that old scare film, “Reefer Madness,” the way people were talking about pot use. Can marijuana actually make you paranoid, schizophrenic, or otherwise mentally unwell>? Well, there’s a new study out (if you wait five minutes, there is always a new study out) that says no, you don’t have much to worry about. The new study concludes that smoking pot does not, in fact, increase the risk of developing some kind of anxiety disorder. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Psychiatry. The study looked at 35,000 adult Americans. The group was first evaluated to determine what their pot smoking habits happened to be. Then, three years later, the same group was re-evaluated to gauge their state of mental wellness. The study had to be adjusted for “covariates,” whatever that means, but what the researchers determined was that pot use doesn’t increase your chances of having anxiety disorders or mood disorders. The study also found that pot smokers were also drinkers, and there was a correlation between people who had drug problems who also smoked pot (well, duh) and people who smoked pot who had real problems with alcohol. Probably not surprisingly, if you were a pot smoker you were more likely to be a cigarette smoker, too.The researchers say that when it comes to legalization of pot, the fact that most people smoking pot don’t have an increased risk of mental health problems is something that should be factored in. People have argued for years that our societal acceptance of alcohol actually contributes to more death and harm than people who smoke pot. Pot smokers are also known for being mellow, not violent or predatory. There is no real belief that pot smokers will get strung out and start committing crimes to get more pot, the way other drug abusers do.So what does all this means to you?
